COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Furman seniors Cameron Ponder and Dylan Schubert ran sub-4:00 miles, and the Paladin women won two events Saturday at the USC Indoor Open at the Carolina Indoor Track & Field Complex in Columbia.

Ponder, a native of Winston-Salem, N.C., won the event with a personal-best time of 3:57.66 to record his fifth-career sub-4:00 mile.  Schubert, who hails from Loveland, Colo., ran a collegiate mile in competition for the first time on Saturday, placing second with a time of 3:58.38.  The Paladin duo was paced by senior Carson Williams, who posted his second career sub-4:00 mile earlier this season at USC.  Later in the day, Williams went on to finish third in the 800m with a time of 1:52.56.  

In addition to Ponder's victory, the Paladin women picked up gold in both the mile and the 3,000m.  Junior Sierra Bower won the mile with a time of 4:46.10, and senior Madelynne Cadeau took first in the 3,000m at 9:43.42. 

Bower led five Furman women who placed among the top six in the mile.  Senior Nicole Matysik posted a personal-best time of 4:47.92 for second place, followed by senior Abigail Robertson in third place at 4:51.99.  Sophomore Clair Garrett finished fourth with a PR of 4:59.04, and junior Callie Harper recorded a personal-best time of 5:02.94 for sixth place.  

Sophomore Camryn Wennersten finished second with a personal-best time of 2:08.59 in the 800m, and senior Beth Donnelly placed tenth in the event with a season-best time of 2:19.65.  Also in the 3,000m,  senior Kylie Wittman crossed the line in 10:26.49 for tenth place.  

The Furman men had two additional top-five finishers in the mile:  sophomore Luke Taylor in fourth place (4:07.97) and junior Nick Goldstein in fifth place (4:08.67), both personal bests.  

The Paladins will compete at the Southern Conference Championship, Feb. 24-25, in Lexington, Va.
