Poritzky Picks Up Singles Win At 37th-Ranked North Carolina

Paladins Fall To Tar Heels, 6-1

Chapel Hill, N.C. – The 37th-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels topped the Furman men's tennis team, 6-1, on Monday at the Chewning Tennis Center. Paladin junior Elijah Poritzky defeated Benjamin Kittay at number one singles to score for the Paladins.

Furman drops to 6-7 overall while North Carolina improves its record to 6-3 on the season.

The Tar Heels claimed the opening point after securing both completed doubles matches. In the No. 3 match, Karl Poling and Will Peters defeated Cole Burnam and Alex Han, 6-1. Kittay and Phillip Jordan, playing at No. 1, clinched the point with their 6-2 triumph versus Poritzky and Thomas Kennedy. Ben Cahill and Emil Westling were trailing in their No. 2 match against Patrick Schoen and Peter Murphy, 5-2, when the doubles point was clinched.

North Carolina followed in singles play by winning five of the six matches to record the 6-1 victory. Peters, ranked 84th nationally, topped Connor Laymon in the No. 5 match, 6-0, 6-1, and Anuj Watane won his No. 6 match over John Rado, 6-2, 6-2. Schoen won the contest for the Tar Heels with his 6-1, 7-5 triumph over Kennedy at No. 4. Poling, the 65th-ranked player nationally, defeated Westling at No. 3 in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5. Leonardo Dal Boni would fall at No. 2 to Jordan, ranked 110th in the nation, 6-7(5), 2-6.

Playing at the top position, Poritzky registered his second consecutive victory when he defeated Kittay, who is ranked 99th nationally, in three sets. Poritzky captured the opening set, 6-4, before falling in a second set tiebreaker, 6-7(7). The Palma de Mallorca, Spain, native cruised in the third set, 10-3, to put the Paladins on the board.

Furman continues its seven-match road trip on Friday afternoon, opening Southern Conference play at 2 p.m. versus UNC Greensboro.
