Paladins Secure First Road Victory Of The Season

West Point, N.Y. – The Furman men's tennis team registered its first road win of the season Saturday morning rallying for a 4-1 victory over the Army West Point Black Knights in non-conference action from Lichtenberg Tennis Center.

With the win, Furman evens its record at 4-4 on the season. Army drops to 2-2 overall.

The Black Knights would capture two of the three doubles matches to secure the point and hold an early 1-0 lead. In the No. 2 match, Marcus Sebastian and Alan Ton picked up a 6-2 win over Ben Cahill and Emil Westling. Jake Huarte and Michael Rooney followed at No. 3 with a 6-4 victory against Cole Burnam and Alex Han.

Thomas Kennedy and Elijah Poritzky, playing at No. 1, recorded their team-leading fifth victory of the season, and fourth straight, after topping Samuel Haikal and Vishnu Bodavula, 6-3.

The Paladins responded in singles play by winning all four completed contests and claimed the 4-1 match victory.

Leonardo Dal Boni and John Rado posted back-to-back wins at No. 3 and No. 5, respectively, to put Furman ahead, 2-1. Dal Boni tallied his fourth win of the season with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Haikal, and Rado added a 7-6(4), 6-4 triumph against Sebastian for his second victory. In the No. 6 contest, Walker Allen also compiled a straight set win, his second of the year, over Ton, 7-6(3), 7-6(2).

Westling gave Furman the match victory at No. 4 when, after dropping the first set, won the final two for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 triumph versus Bodavula. The win was Westling's fourth this year, which ties Dal Boni for first on the team.

The final two singles matches with Poritzky and Kennedy both went unfinished in the third sets. Poritzky was leading his No. 1 match against Daniel Zhou, 6-2, 5-7, 5-1, while Kennedy, playing at No. 2, split the first two sets versus Huarte with the score sitting at 7-5, 4-6, 1-2.
