SUNSET, S.C. -- Furman senior Anna Morgan (-8) fired an opening round 64 and holds a two-stroke lead at the Clemson Invitational, which is being held at the par 72, 6,441 yard The Reserve At Lake Keowee in Sunset, S.C.
A native of Spartanburg, S.C., Morgan teed off on No. 9 in the shotgun start and birdied three holes on the back. She added additional birdies in four of her first five holes after the turn then an eighth birdie on No. 7 completed the flawless round. After shooting the 64, the second-best round in Furman women's golf history, Morgan leads the field by two strokes over LSU's Ingrid Lindblad (-6), the world's top-ranked women's amateur. Morgan, who is averaging 2.44 strokes under par per round, is 61-under for the year through 25 rounds.
Furman (+1) sits in sixth place in the loaded field. No. 24 Vanderbilt (-8) holds a five-stroke lead over 18th-ranked Clemson (-3) and No. 17 Texas A&M (-3), who are tied for second. Fifth-ranked LSU (-1) sits in fourth place, followed by No. 39 Ohio State (E) in fifth. The Paladins are ahead of eight Power 5 teams with two rounds to play.
Freshman Audrey Ryu (E) carded an even 72 with birdies on No. 6 and No. 15 to tie for 20th, while junior Alise Knudson (+2) is tied for 40th after posting a 2-over 74 with four birdies. Senior Caroline Crumrine (+7) recorded a 79 and is tied for 80th entering Saturday's second round, and freshman Kelsi Mauzy (+8) tallied an 80 with a birdie on No. 7 to tie for 86th.
The Paladins will tee off of No. 1 beginning at 9:10 a.m. on Saturday and will play in a group with Ohio State, Michigan State, and Kentucky.
