Furman Edges Wofford In SoCon Quarterfinals, 4-2

Paladins Face No. 2 Samford Friday In Semifinals

Chattanooga, Tenn. – The third-seeded Furman men's tennis team moves on at the SoCon Men's Tennis Championship following a 4-2 quarterfinal victory Thursday evening over No. 6 seed Wofford at the Champions Club.

With the win, Furman (13-11) advances to the semifinals of the conference tournament. The Paladins will square off against No. 2 seed Samford on Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. with the winner reaching the finals of the SoCon Men's Tennis Championship. Furman has now appeared in the semifinals every year the tournament has been contested since 2014.

The Paladins won both completed doubles matches to claim the opening point and take a 1-0 lead over the Terriers (7-12). Cole Burnam and Connor Laymon began things with a 6-1 triumph in the No. 3 match over Will Fullett and Ian Rasheed. The duo of Ben Cahill and Emil Westling, playing at No. 2, followed by outlasting Alex Horn and Ashe Ray, 6-3.

Wofford rallied back in singles play with victories at No. 3 and No. 5 to trail Furman, 3-2, with two matches remaining. Robbie Young was leading second team All-SoCon pick Thomas Kennedy at No. 2 but would not be able to finish as Laymon, playing in the No. 6 match, held off Horn in three sets, 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-2, to secure the win for the Paladins.

Furman also received singles victories in straight sets from first team All-SoCon selection Elijah Poritzky at No. 1 and John Rado at No. 4. Rado beat Jack Deveney, 6-1, 6-2, and, following a win by the Terriers at No. 3, Poritzky answered with a 7-6(5), 6-2 victory against Max Graham.

The Paladins improve to 45-2 all-time against Wofford with Thursday's win being the first at the SoCon Men's Tennis Championship since a 4-0 sweep on April 20, 2018 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
