Box Score COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Furman men's tennis team began its 2025 season on Sunday falling, 7-0, to the 15
th-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks in non-conference action from the Carolina Indoor Tennis Center.
Furman falls to 0-1 on the season while South Carolina improves to 1-0 overall.
The Gamecocks, ranked preseason number 15 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), captured two of the three doubles matches to jump out to the early 1-0 lead over the Paladins. Connor Thomson and Casey Hoole teamed up to defeat
Cole Burnam and
Connor Laymon at number one, 6-0, and Max Stenzer and Atakan Karaham secured the point by adding a 6-1 triumph in the number three match versus
Nicolas Dispas and
John Rado.
Elijah Poritzky and
Nico Snyder, playing at number two, were trailing Jelani Sarr and Sean Daryabeigi, 3-4, when the match went unfinished.
South Carolina followed by winning all six singles matches to claim the 7-0 victory. Karahan, playing at No. 4, topped Dispas, 6-0, 6-1, and Gabe Avram added a 6-0, 6-0 win versus Burnam at No. 6. Daryabeigi won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 versus
Theophile Joly, and Stenzer recorded a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Laymon in the No. 5 contest. Thomson defeated Poritzky at the top spot, 6-4, 6-4. In the No. 3 match, Sarr closed out the contest by winning 6-3, 6-2 over Rado.
Furman, who opens the season with four straight road matches, is off until January 25-26 when it travels to face Xavier and Bellarmine.
