GREENVILLE, S.C. — The Southern Conference today recognized Furman's
Ian Williams as its special teams player of the week for his impressive work in the Paladins' 24-14 win over The Citadel on Saturday.
It marked the third league player of the week honor this year for Williams, a preseason first team Stats Perform All-America pick who now owns six league weekly scrolls in his Paladin career, in addition to a national special teams player of the week honor collected earlier this season.
Williams contributed significantly in three areas of special teams play in the victory over The Citadel, converting all three field goal attempts covering 45, 36, and 21 yards to give Furman a 9-0 first half lead. In the second half, after The Citadel went up 14-9, he delivered a game turning 47-yard punt that was downed at the Bulldog 3-yard line. Three plays later, and following a punt from The Citadel 4, Furman regained possession at the Bulldog 40 to set up a four-play, go-ahead touchdown drive for a 17-14 lead.
Three of Williams' five punts were downed inside The Citadel 20-yard line, and he recorded five touchbacks on six kickoffs to maintain his season touchback percentage rate at 80 percent (32x40) — 30 percentage points higher than his closest league competitor.
In accounting for 10 of Furman's 24 points in the contest and improving to 11-of-14 in made field goals this season, the Charlotte, N.C., product climbed from 14th to 11th on Furman's career scoring chart with 222 points, and from eighth to sixth on FU's scoring ledger. Williams is 53-of-70 (.757) on field goals as a Paladin.
Furman (5-3, 3-2 SoCon) plays host to SoCon front runner Mercer (6-1, 5-0 SoCon) this Saturday in a 2:00 p.m. contest in Paladin Stadium.
