GAINESVILLE, Fla -- Furman's Will Morlan (-5) fired a 1-under 69 in rainy conditions to finish fourth Sunday in the final round of the 48th Gators Invitational, which was hosted by Florida at the par 70, 6,701 yard Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla.
Morlan, a senior from Alpharetta, Ga., teed off on No. 10 in the day's modified shotgun start and birdied No. 11. He turned at even par then added three birdies on the back, despite the round being delayed due to rain. Morlan, who led the field with a 2.80 scoring average on the par 3s, birdied his final hole for a team-high four birdies and concluded the tournament just three strokes behind Florida's Ian Gilligan (-8), who won a playoff over Justin Matthews of Charlotte (-8) to claim the individual title.
Junior Harris Barth (+1) carded an even 70 with an eagle on the par-4 No. 17 and a birdie on No. 12 to tie for 17th, while freshman Ludvig Josefsson (+9) recorded a 72 with birdies on No. 3 and No. 18 to tie for 48th.
Senior Trey Diehl (+12) posted consecutive birdies on No. 17 and No. 18 before the turn and added a third birdie on No. 7 to tie for 62nd with a final-round 75, and junior Clark Akers (+14) birdied three out of four holes from No. 14 through No. 17 to finish the day with a 74, tying for 68th.
Host Florida (-17), which ranks 14th nationally, won the tournament by a stroke over ninth-ranked Oklahoma State (-16). Florida Gulf Coast (-4) and Georgia Southern (-4) tied for third, followed by Charlotte (+5) in fifth. The Paladins (+9) tied for sixth with No. 25 South Florida (+9).
Furman ranked second with a 3.12 average on the par 3s and tied for the tournament lead with three eagles.
The Paladins will compete at the Seminole Intercollegiate in Thomasville, Ga., March 10-11.
