GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Furman men's tennis team suffered a 4-3 setback to the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs in non-conference action Sunday afternoon from Mickel Tennis Center.
Furman drops to 2-4 on the season while Gardner-Webb improves to 8-1 overall.
For the third consecutive match, the Paladins collected the doubles point after posting wins at No. 2 and No. 3. The Runnin' Bulldogs picked up a win at No. 1 before Cole Burman and
Connor Laymon, playing at No. 2, registered their second win of the year with a 6-2 triumph over Kaua Cressoni and Numa Lemieux-Monette. In the No. 3 match,
Nicolas Dispas and
Nico Snyder clinched the point with their team-leading third win this season, 6-4, versus Alexandre Bergeron and Alex Lepine.
Gardner-Webb recorded three straight victories to begin singles before
Theophile Joly cut Furman's deficit to 3-2 when he defeated Lemieux-Monette in three sets, 6-1, 2-6, 7-6(6), at No. 2 for his second win of the year.
The Runnin' Bulldogs secured the match at No. 6 when Boyd Schreiber topped
Connor Laymon, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.
Walker Allen closed out the contest at No. 5 coming from behind for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 win against Lepine. The win was Allen's team best third of the season.
The Paladins return to the road next weekend, February 22-23, to take on Queens (N.C.) and Clemson.
