CLEMSON, S.C. – The 31
st-ranked Clemson Tigers topped the Furman men's tennis team, 4-1, on Sunday at the Duckworth Family Tennis Facility. Senior
Elijah Poritzky defeated Noa Vukadin at number one singles to score for the Paladins.
Furman drops to 3-5 overall while Clemson improves its record to 10-1 on the season.
The Tigers clinched the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead over the Paladins after sweeping both completed matches at No. 1 and No. 3. In the No. 3 match, Marko Mesarovic and Matt Pitts topped
Nicolas Dispas and
Nico Snyder, 6-1. Vukadin and Max Smith captured the point for Clemson at No. 1 after holding off Poritzky and
Matt Kandel, 6-4.
Cole Burnam and
Connor Laymon, playing at No. 2, were leading their match versus Wissam Abderrahman and Max Damm, 5-3, when the Tigers picked up the point.
The Tigers followed in singles play by winning three of the four completed matches for the 4-1 victory. Pitts topped Dispas in the No. 5 match, 6-1, 6-3, and Stewart Aronson won his No. 6 match over
Walker Allen, 6-0, 6-2. Mesarovic won the contest for Clemson with his 6-4, 6-2 triumph over
Theophile Joly at No. 3.
Playing at the top position, Poritzky registered his fourth victory of the season and is the second straight year the Palma de Mallorca, Spain, native defeated a Top-100 opponent from an ACC program. Poritzky collected a straight-set victory over Vukadin, who was ranked 47
th nationally, by a 6-3, 6-3 score.
Furman is back at Mickel Tennis Center on Friday, February 28 when it hosts UNC Greensboro and North Greenville in a doubleheader. The Paladins step back into Southern Conference play at 3 p.m. versus UNC Greensboro before turning around at 6:30 p.m. to face North Greenville.
