RALEIGH, N.C. -- Senior Matthew Smith finished 15th in the 5,000m to lead the Furman track and field teams Thursday in the opening day of the Raleigh Relays at the Paul Derr Track & Field Facility on the campus of N.C. State. The meet is one nation's first premier competitions during each outdoor season.
Smith, a native of Leesburg, Va., recorded a personal-best time of 3:40.54, which is the 13th-best qualifying time for the NCAA East Preliminaries at this point in the season.
Junior Luke Taylor turned in a PR of 28:53.36 to finish 41st in the 10,000m. The time ranks 32nd nationally for the East region.
In the 5,000m, sophomore Chris Knight placed 62nd with a time of 13:59.01, and fifth-year student Evan Guzman was 127th after crossing the line in 14:19.27. Knight's time is currently 38th on the East region leaders list.
The meet continues on Friday and Saturday.
