TAMPA, FLA. – The No. 36 South Florida Bulls blanked the Furman men's tennis team, 7-0, in non-conference action Thursday afternoon at USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
Furman drops to 5-7 overall while South Florida improves to 11-3 on the season.
The Bulls took two of the three doubles matches at No. 1 and No. 2 to claim the opening point. Toto Llanes and Stepan Mruzek recorded a 7-5 victory over
Matt Kandel and
Elijah Poritzky at No. 1, and Hugo Car and Agustin Cuellar downed
Cole Burnam and
Connor Laymon, playing at No. 2, 6-4.
In the No. 3 match,
Nicolas Dispas and
Nico Snyder recorded their team leading eighth victory of the season with a 6-2 triumph versus Michael Chan and Ben Hudson.
In singles, South Florida recorded wins in all six matches to secure the 7-0 win. Cuellar topped Kandel at No. 2 by scores of 6-1, 6-1, and Elijah Cham defeated
Theophile Joly in the No. 3 match, 6-1, 6-4. Gughi Verdese, playing at No. 5, clinched the match for the Bulls with his 6-4, 6-1 win over Dispas. Llanes was victorious over
Walker Allen at No. 6, 6-3, 6-1, and Car, ranked 80
th nationally, earned a 7-5, 6-3 victory against Poritzky at No. 1.
John Rado, playing at No. 4, sent his match versus Mruzek into a third set to close out the match. Rado took the opening set, 7-5, before Mruzek came back with a 6-3 win in the second. Mruzek won 10-7 in the third set to pick up the victory.
