Paladins Secure No. 5 Seed In Next Week's SoCon Men's Tennis Championship

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Furman men's tennis team rallied back with four singles victories Saturday afternoon to secure a 4-3 Southern Conference win over the Wofford Terriers in its regular season finale at Reeves Tennis Center.

Furman, who improves to 46-2 all-time against the Terriers, concludes the regular season with a 7-14 overall record and 3-4 mark in the SoCon. With the loss, Wofford drops to 6-12 on the year and 1-6 in conference play.

The Terriers clinched the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 to take the early 1-0 lead over the Paladins. Furman struck first at No. 3 when the tandem of Nicolas Dispas and Nico Snyder registered their team leading 12th win of the year with a 6-3 victory over Daniel Clivio and Max Graham. Wofford picked up the point when the No. 2 pairing of Ian Rasheed and Hugo Rask topped Cole Burnam and Connor Laymon, 6-4, and the No. 1 combination of Jack Deveney and Robbie Young held off Matt Kandel and Elijah Poritzky in a tiebreaker, 7-6(5), to collect the doubles point.

The Paladins won four singles matches at No. 1, No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 to secure the victory. Kandel got things started at the top position picking up his fifth win with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph in straight sets over Young. Clivio followed for Wofford at No. 3 with a 6-2, 6-4 win against John Rado, and Snyder answered in his No. 5 match versus Rask, moving to 6-1 in singles this season, with a 6-2, 6-4 victory. The teams traded the next two points with Deveney defeating Theophile Joly in straight sets at No. 2, 6-4, 6-4, and Dispas also winning his fifth match of the year at No. 6 when he held off Owen Dooley in three sets, 1-6, 6-1, 6-1.

The deciding match came down to the No. 4 contest between Rasheed and Furman's Walker Allen. Allen took the first set, 6-0, before Rasheed responded with a 7-5 win in the second. Allen won the match for the Paladins in the third set, 6-1, to record his team best 11th singles victory of the season.

The win gives Furman the No. 5 seed in next week's SoCon Men's Tennis Championship. The Paladins are scheduled to face fourth-seeded Chattanooga on Thursday, April 17 at 8:30 a.m. from the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.
