TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Furman's Trey Diehl (-1) fired a 71 to tie for 16th in Monday's first round of the NCAA Tallahassee Regional at the par-72, 7,520 yard Seminole Legacy Golf Club in Tallahassee, Fla.
A senior from Orlando, Fla., Diehl teed off on No. 10 and notched three birdies on the back to turn at even par. He birdied three out of his first four holes on the front then added a team-high seventh birdie on No. 9 to finish the day at 1-under par. He sits five strokes back of individual leader Luke Clanton (-6) of Florida State, who ranks fifth nationally and carded a 66 in Monday's first round.
Senior Will Morlan (E) shot a 72 with three birdies to tie for 25th, and junior Clark Akers tallied a 73 with birdies on No. 4 and No. 6, tying for 33rd. Junior Harris Barth (+2) is tied for 41st after posting a 74 with birdies on No. 4 and No. 18, and freshman Ludvig Josefsson (+5) recorded a 77 with birdies on No. 2 and No. 15.
No. 11 Florida State (-14) leads the regional by seven strokes over 39th-ranked Notre Dame (-7). Third-ranked Ole Miss (-6) sits in third, followed by No. 46 New Mexico (-3) and Augusta (-3), who are tied for fourth. No. 22 Georgia (-2) is in sixth place, followed by the Paladins (+2) and 34th-ranked Northwestern (+2), who are tied for seventh.Â
The Paladins, who will tee off of No. 1 at 8:25 a.m. on Tuesday and play in a group with Northwestern and Michigan State, are part of a 14-team regional field that is battling for a top-five finish and a berth in the 30-team NCAA Championship, which will be held May 23-28 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif. Â
Furman, which received a regional at-large bid for just the second time since 2002, is making its sixth NCAA Regional appearance. The Paladins last competed at a regional in 2023, when Furman finished tenth at the NCAA Salem Regional in Salem, S.C.
