CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Freshman Olivia Hasselbach (+3) is tied for 31st to lead the Furman women's golf team at the conclusion of Monday's opening round of the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional at the par-70, 6,177 yard Finley Golf Club. The Paladins (+18) are tied for ninth in the 12-team field.
A native of Tampa, Fla., Hasselbach teed off on No. 10 and notched birdies on No. 16 and No. 18 before the turn. She added additional birdies on No. 2 and No. 8 and finished the day with a 3-over 73.
Sophomore Jenna Madden (+4) carded a 74 with birdies on No. 8 and No. 11 to tie for 38th, while sophomore Eva Ringwald (+5) recorded a 75 with a birdie on No. 1, tying for 44th. Junior Audrey Ryu (+6) is tied for 48th entering Tuesday's second round after scoring a 76 with a birdie on No. 4. Freshman Ava Hanneman (+10) shot an 80 with a birdie on No. 16 and is in 63rd place.
North Carolina's Megan Streicher (-5), who is ranked 28th nationally, fired a 65 to lead the field in the opening round.
No. 12 North Carolina (-6) holds a five-stroke lead over fifth-ranked Texas (-1) with 36 holes to play. No. 35 Virginia (+1) is third, while 20th-ranked Oklahoma State (+2) and No. 17 Mississippi State (+2) are tied for fourth.
Tuesday's second round begins at 8 a.m. with teams teeing off of No. 1 and No. 10. The Paladins will tee off on No. 1 on Tuesday and will compete in a group with No. 39 Michigan State and 28th-ranked Kent State.
Furman is part of a 12-team regional field that is battling for a top-five finish and a berth in the 30-team NCAA Championship, which will be held May 22-27 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif. The Paladins, which secured the SoCon's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by capturing their 22nd league championship last month, are making their 26th NCAA Regional appearance. Furman appeared in 17-straight regionals from 1993, when the regional format began, until 2010.
