Furman Shuts Out Wofford 3-0 In SoCon Volleyball Action

GREENVILLE, South Carolina - Furman's Lady Paladin volleyball team improved to 11-12 overall and 6-5 in the Southern Conference with a 3-0 (30-20, 30-19, 30-27) victory over Wofford Friday night in Alley Gym.

The Lady Paladins came out swinging in game one and outhit Wofford .485 to .179 while posting 3.0 team blocks to the Terrier's zero. Freshman setter Courtney Stewardson and senior middle Julia Fredrickson set the pace early, scoring five kills each in the opening game, while hitting .714 and .833, respectively.

Game two went Furman's way as well, with the Lady Paladins' Chibuzo Aguocha and Ally Hock each recording five kills, while the team outblocked the Terriers 3.0 to 1.0. Furman again hit over .400 (.438) and held Wofford to a .091 attack percentage with six error and nine kills on 33 attempts.

Game three proved more challenging for the Lady Paladins, with Wofford taking an 18-13 lead before Furman stormed back to tie the match at 22. Wofford took another lead, 27-26, on a Katie Laser service ace, but Furman rattled off four consecutive points, including a Rosey Cashman ace that fell for game point, to win the match in straight sets.

The Lady Paladins were paced on the night by Fredrickson, who tallied 12 kills, a .588 attack percentage, and nine blocks in the victory. Chibuzo Aguocha and Whitney Purser each contributed 10 kills, while Rosey Cashman tallied a team-best 11 digs. Stewardson posted strong all-around numbers with seven kills, a .412 attack percentage, 37 assists, one ace, seven digs, and three block assists.

Wofford was led by Katie Laser, who recorded 12 kills and a .241 hitting percentage on the night. Simons Swanson topped the defense with eight digs, while Katie Sobczyk and Christal Carey were each in on the Terrier's lone block. At the end of the match, Furman held an 11.5 to 1.0 blcoking advantage over the Terriers.

With the loss Wofford falls to 8-18 overall and 4-7 in the Southern Conference. The Lady Paladins will play on Tuesday, Nov. 2, at Gardner-Webb, while the Terriers host Elon on Sunday, Oct. 31, at 2 p.m.
