Furman Volleyball Survives Five-Game Marathon Against Chicago State

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Furman's Lady Paladin volleyball team improved to 4-5 overall with a five-game marathon win over Chicago State Friday at the Iowa Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa.

The Lady Paladins rebounded from a 3-0 loss to Eastern Washington earlier in the day to outlast CSU 30-21, 18-30, 30-21, 23-30, 15-12.

Four Lady Paladins recorded double figure kills, including a team-best 17 by Whitney Purser, who also paced the Furman defense with 16 digs. It was sophomore Ally Hock, however, who was Furman's most efficient hitter with 14 kills on 26 attempts and just two errors in posting a .462 attack percentage for the match. In addition, senior middle hitter Julia Fredrickson totaled 13 kills and freshman Chibuzo Aguocha recorded 12 kills, 14 digs, and a lethal seven service aces in the victory. Freshman Courtney Stewardson handled primary setting duties for the Lady Paladins, totaling 56 assists in the match. Stewardson also contributed four block assists to the Furman net defense, which put up 9.0 team blocks in the victory.

Chicago State was paced by Stacy Cole's 16 kills, while Natalie Spelman totaled a team-best 15 digs. The Cougars totaled 10.0 team blocks on the evening.

Furman returns to action on Saturday with a 3 p.m. match against the host Hawkeyes of the University of Iowa.
