Lady Paladin Volleyball Drops 3-1 Decision to ASU

GREENVILLE, South Carolina - Furman's Lady Paladin volleyball team fell to 7-12 overall and 3-6 in the Southern Conference with a 3-1 (30-26, 30-24, 31-29, 30-28) loss to Appalachian State Saturday in Alley Gym.

The Mountaineers rolled up 18.0 team blocks in holding the Lady Paladins to a .150 hitting percentage in the match. Amy Lewis tallied one block solo and eight block assists to pace ASU, while Diana Thomas added seven block assists and middle Stefanie Panzer tallied three block solos and six block assists.

Furman hitting was led by Whitney Purser and Chibuzo Aguocha, who each tallied 20 kills while Ally Hock added 15 and had the best hitting percentage of the three, with a .229 mark. Purser added 13 digs in the effort while Kim Tonkin paced the Lady Paladins with 18. Middle hitter Kerry Wooten topped Furman's net defense with five block assists.

After falling easily in the first two games, Furman surged ahead early in game three and took a 20-15 advantage before ASU come back and evened the score at 28. The Mountaineers took a 29-28 advantage on an Aguocha error, but the sophomore from Houston, Texas, tallied a kill on the next rally to even the score at 29. An ASU attacking error followed by a Kerry Wooten kill secured the victory for the Lady Paladins.

Game four stayed even until 14 all, when ASU went on an 8-2 run and pulled ahead 22-16. Furman responded to tie the score at 26 and pulled ahead by one on another Aguocha kill, but Stefanie Panzer served the last three points of the game to earn the 30-28 Mountaineer victory.

With the win, the Mountaineers improve to 12-7 overall and 5-2 in Southern Conference action. They will face Wofford on Sunday in Spartanburg, while Furman hosts Davidson tomorrow at 2 p.m.
