Furman Falters In Volleyball Semifinals

STATESBORO, Ga. - Furman's Lady Paladin volleyball team wrapped up the 2005 season on Saturday with a 3-1 (30-22, 28-30, 30-23, 30-25) loss to the Appalachian State Mountaineers in the Southern Conference Tournament semifinals.

Sophomore middle blocker Kerry Wooten had a career day, with 21 kills in the four game match against the Mountaineers. Fellow middle blocker, freshman Emily Harby, also found success, totaling 13 kills with two block solos and six block assists on the day and was named to the SoCon All-Tournament Team. Junior all-conferece selection Whitney Purser managed just seven kills in the loss, but paced the team with 19 digs, while Kim Tonkin added 18 digs and Ally Hock contributed 14.

Diana Thomas led the Mountaineer charge with 18 kills, while Brittany Zahn added 15 and Kali Rumberger anchored the defense with 22 digs.

Furman outblocked the Mountainneers 11.0 to 9.5, but were outhit .255 to .171.

With the loss, the Lady Paladins end the season with a 15-16 overall record. Furman posted a 9-9 mark in Southern Conference regular season action and was the No. 6 seed in the league championships.
