Furman's Lady Paladin volleyball team completed a season sweep of Elon with a 3-1 victory over the Phoenix Friday night at Alley Gym.
After a quick 30-17 victory in game one, the Lady Paladins fell in a game two marathon 33-31. Furman returned from the break between games two and three to post a decisive 30-18 victory, then held on for a 30-26 win in game four to seal the match.
The Lady Paladins were led by sophomore Kerry Wooten, who posted a career-best 19 kills with a .500 attack percentage. Whitney Purser added 17 kills and 15 digs to the Lady Paladin effort, while Emily Harby contributed 15 kills and libero Kim Tonkin tallied a team-best 26 digs. Harby also paced the Paladin net defense with five block assists, while Hock added four block assists and Courtney Stewardson and Wooten each added three.
Britany Westphal paced the Phoenix with 13 kills, while Emily Lucci added 10. Brooke Pickard totaled 11 digs while Ashley Ruckert, Juliena Gigo, and Lucci each claimed four block assists.
With the win, the Lady Paladins improve to 11-14 overall and 7-8 in Southern Conference play. Elon falls to 7-20 overall and 5-10 in league play. Furman will wrap up the 2005 home slate Saturday with a 2 p.m. match against UNC Greensboro, while Elon travels to Spartanburg to play the Wofford Terriers.
