Furman's Lady Paladin volleyball team ended the 2005 home schedule with a victory on Saturday, defeating the visiting Spartans of UNC Greensboro 3-1 (30-22, 26-30, 30-25, 30-15) in Alley Gym.
Furman won games one, three, and four to seal the match victory and improve to 12-14 overall and 8-8 in Southern Conference play, while the Spartans fell to 4-22 overall and 2-13 in league action.
The Lady Paladins were paced by sophomore outside hitter Chibuzo Aguocha, who tallied 21 kills with a .256 attack percentage in the victory. Freshman Emily Harby added 13 kills, while Whitney Purser contributed 12 and Ally Hock tallied up 10. In addition, libero Kim Tonkin recorded a team-best 15 digs, while setter Molly Rybak, a senior playing in her final home match, totaled 50 assists and 10 digs in the win.
The Furman net defense, which totaled 14.0 blocks in the match, was anchored by Harby, a freshman middle hitter who totaled three block solos and four block assists in the effort. Kerry Wooten added six block assists, while Aguocha contributed four.
UNCG was led by Hilary Overby's 10 kills, while Christin Heverly contributed 12 digs. Kaitlyn Nortz topped the Spartan's net defense with seven block assists, while Lauren Keiser added a block solo and four assists to the effort.
Furman returns to action next Friday night in a 7 p.m. match at Davidson. The Spartans will face Wofford on Sunday in Spartanburg.
