The Furman volleyball team claimed a 3-0 victory over Bethune-Cookman Saturday on the second day of the FAU Invitational, then dropped a 3-0 decision to the host Owls in the tournament's nightcap. Junior Ally Hock (Oviedo, Fla.) was named to the FAU Invitational All Tournament team.
The Lady Paladins handed Bethune-Cookman a 30-23, 30-19, 30-18 loss on the strength of 13 kills and 13 digs by junior Whitney Purser (Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.), and an 11 kill effort by Hock. In addition, senior libero Molly Rybak (Bloomington, Minn.) totaled 19 digs, while sophomore Kerry Wooten (Hamptonville, N.C.) added 10 kills and setter Courtney Stewardson (Apple Valley, Minn.) picked up 40 set assists, while adding six kills to the winning effort.
Furman outhit Bethune-Cookman .310 to -.027 and tallied 8.0 blocks to the Wildcats' 2.0. In addition, the Lady Paladins totaled 53 digs to BCC's 39.
In the tournament finale, the Owls of Florida Atlantic defended their home court with a 30-20, 30-23, 30-28 victory over Furman. Chibuzo Aguocha (Houston, Texas) paced the team with 10 kills, while Stewardson claimed a team-best eight digs and 25 set assists.
FAU was led by Kelly Paiva's 13 kills.
Hock, who was the only member of the Lady Paladin team to earn all-tournament status, totaled 25 kills, a .179 attack percentage, 28 digs, and seven total blocks in three Furman matches.
With Saturday's results, Furman's record moves to 1-2 on the season. The Lady Paladins return to action next weekend in the Winthrop Invitational.
