Furman Falls to Appalachian State in Five-Game Thriller

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Appalachian State continued its seven-game winning streak with a 3-2 win over the Paladins in Alley gymnasium on Tuesday night.

Game one saw the Paladins get off to a slow start, allowing the Mountaineers to take the game 30-28.

Appalachian State carried the momentum into game two, taking a 16-11 lead before the Paladins went on a 13-0 run behind Pamela Gehrke's serve. Furman took the game 30-23.

In game three, the Paladins held the lead for the majority of the game, winning by a score of 30-26. Furman faltered in game four, allowing the Mountaineers to take a 19-9 lead and win the game 30-14.

The Mountaineers continued their dominance in the fifth game, finishing the match with a 15-10 win over the Paladins.

The Mountaineers were led by senior Brittany Zahn's 30 kills, while libero Heather Kale added 22 digs to lead the defense.

Furman was led by senior Chibuzo Aguocha's 16 kills and 17 digs. Junior defensive specialist Pamela Gehrke recorded 18 defensive saves to lead Furman's defense. Junior Alison West added 13 kills and senior Kerry Wooten notched 12 kills and a .417 hitting percentage in the losing effort.

With the loss, the Paladins fall to 15-6 overall and 8-3 in the conference, while Appalachian State improves to 13-12 on the season and 9-3 in league play. The Paladins continue their home stand on Friday night with a match against Elon.
