Senior Mike Brown
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Coming off a 31-14 Southern Conference
season opening win over arch-rival The Citadel, FCS 18th-ranked
Furman faces another old foe this Saturday when the Paladins make
the short drive to Spartanburg to face the Wofford Terriers in a
1:30 p.m. contest at Gibbs Stadium.
Furman and Wofford played the first football game in the state of
South Carolina on Dec. 14, 1889, and have bumped heads on the
gridiron 83 times, including every year since 1995 after the
Terriers moved from the NAIA ranks to NCAA Division II and finally
Division I FCS play.
The Paladins own a decisive 50-26-7 advantage in the series and
have gone 7-3 against the Terriers since 2000, including last
year's 58-21 verdict in Greenville. Wofford, however, claimed a
35-10 decision over Furman in 2008 to snap the Paladins' four-game
winning streak in Spartanburg. Furman's 4-1 record in Gibbs Stadium
since 2000 is the best of any SoCon foe on the Terriers' home field
during that span.
Furman (2-1, 1-0 SoCon) climbed five spots to 18th in this
week's Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS poll on the strength of the
victory over The Citadel, its sixth straight over the Bulldogs in
Paladin Stadium.
Senior quarterback Cody
Worley paced the Furman effort against The Citadel by passing
for 171 yards and a touchdown and rushing for 36 yards and a pair
of scores. The Paladins built a modest 10-0 halftime lead and
scored on the opening possession of the second half to grab a 17-0
advantage before the Bulldogs cut it to 17-7 early in the fourth
quarter. A 35-yard scoring strike from Worley to wide receiver Daniel
McFadden midway through the final period made it 24-7 and
effectively sealed the game's outcome.
Furman opened the season with a 45-15 thrashing of 25th-ranked
Colgate and dropped a 38-19 decision to 13th-ranked South Carolina
on Sept. 18.
Wofford (2-1, 0-0 SoCon) kicked off the 2010 campaign with a
33-10 loss at Ohio but has come back with two straight victories
over Charleston Southern (37-23) and Union (48-10). The Terrriers
were idle last Saturday.
Furman head coach Bobby Lamb sports a 5-3 record against
Wofford, while veteran Terrier head coach Mike Ayers has compiled a
5-14-1 worksheet against the Paladins.
The Furman-Wofford game will be broadcast over Furman Sports
Network Greenville flagship station WOLT-FM 103.3 and also
available over Upstate affiliate WGOG-FM 96.3 and via stadium
transmitter FM 105.9. In addition, it will be presented online by
StretchAudio through www.furmanpaladins.com. Chuck Hussion, "The
Voice of the Furman Paladins," will call the play-by-play, and set
to deliver color commentary is former Paladin All-America center
Corey Stewart, with another former Paladin, David Cobb, handling
sideline reporting duties.
