Trio Guides Paladins To Fourth Place Finish At Hummingbird Intercollegiate

Sapphire, N.C. – Three Paladins posted rounds of par or better on Tuesday to help the Furman men's golf team climb to a fourth place finish at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate at the par-71, 6,767-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley.

Junior Matt Broome (73-70=143) and sophomore Johnny Kyger (76-70=146) each carded a final round 70 and junior Anthony Aloi fired an even-par 71 as Furman (289-285=574) climbed from eight place to a share of fourth with the second best score of the day, a one-over par 285.  The Paladins finished 11 strokes behind tournament champion Jacksonville (284-279=563) while Vanderbilt (277-292=569) placed second and Kentucky (285-288=573) claimed third place.  Gardner-Webb shared fourth place with Furman.

Aloi and Broome grabbed a share of 13th place with their strong finishes to the 36-hole tournament.  Aloi, a native of Plainsboro, N.J., notched a birdie on the front nine and eagled No. 14 to improve on a first round 72 while Broome collected three birdies during the final round.  Kyger recorded four birdies and an eagle at No. 14 during Tuesday's final round to place 27th.

Vanderbilt's Adam Hofmann (66-69=135) followed an opening round 66 with a two-under 69 on Tuesday to hold onto individual medalist honors.  Stephen Healy of Jacksonville and Matt Nagy of Kennesaw State shared second place at five-under.

The fourth place finish concluded Furman's fall schedule.  The Paladins return to action on February 21-22, at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C.
