Fusan Fires Furman Past Wofford, Into SoCon Semis, 1-0

Box Score

Greenville, S.C. – Freshman Josh Fusan drilled a shot past goalkeeper Andrew Drennan at 108:57 to lift Furman to a 1-0 double overtime victory over Wofford on Sunday night at Stone Soccer Stadium and advance the Paladins into the semifinals of the 2010 Southern Conference Men's Soccer Championship.

No. 2 seed Furman (9-6-4) will travel to Mt. Pleasant, S.C., to face No. 6 seed Davidson in the second of two semifinals on Friday night at the Patriots Point Athletics Complex.  Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. with the winner to advance into Sunday's championship match against the winner of Friday's Appalachian State versus UNC Greensboro contest.

"What a great win tonight for this team," said Paladin head coach Doug Allison.  "They fought all night long and were finally able to find a goal against a tough Wofford team.  We are excited to keep our season going and look forward to the trip to Charleston this week."

For the second time in less than a week, Fusan, the reigning Southern Conference Player of the Week, stepped up to guide the Paladins past Wofford.  The Windermere, Fla., native, who scored a second half goal on Tuesday to down the Terriers 2-1 and give Furman a share of its 19th SoCon regular season title, provided the magic again in the final moments of a match that looked destined for penalty kicks.

With Furman on the attack against a Wofford side that had been reduced to 10 men following Randy McLeod's red card in the 101st minute, a Paladin forward raced to the end line to save the ball from going out for a goal kick and volleyed it over his head into the box.  Fusan attempted a one-timer on the bouncing ball that missed, but the midfielder had enough time to settle the ball at his feet and drive a nine-yard shot past Drennan from the top-right edge of the six-yard box with only 1:03 remaining in the second overtime period.

Wofford (3-11-3) compiled a 15-10 edge in shots on the night, but the shots on goal were knotted at 2-2 prior to Fusan's decisive strike in the 109th minute.  The Paladins produced the best opportunity of a first half that was spent predominantly in the midfield.  Caleb Suri laced a 13th-minute free kick around the Wofford wall to the left post and Drennan spilled the save, but was able to scramble to the loose ball before it crossed the line.  In the second half, Wofford applied early pressure and nearly took the lead on a driving effort from Alex Hutchins towards the far left post, but Furman keeper Alec Kann dove to his right to push the shot wide.

The match got physical in overtime as Suri and Wofford's Taylor Grim each picked up a caution just 15 seconds into the second extra period before McLeod was sent off for a sliding tackle on Dane Roberts along the sideline at midfield as the ball was rolling into touch just 18 seconds later.  Wofford continued to threaten with the dangerous long throws of Billy Padula before Fusan sealed the contest for Furman.

Kann made a pair of saves for the Paladins to notch his sixth shutout of the season and help the Paladins improve to 4-2-4 in 10 overtime contests this year.  Drennan totaled two stops for the Terriers.
