Seniors Help Paladins Top Stetson, Claim Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational Title, 2-1

Box Score

Greenville, S.C. -- Brooks Duff curled a shot into the upper lefthand corner from 28 yards out in the 105th minute to help Furman down Stetson 2-1 and claim the Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational title on Sunday afternoon at Stone Soccer Stadium.

The win gave Furman a perfect 2-0 record in the tournament and improved the Paladins to 3-1-0 on the season.  Stetson dropped to 2-1-0.

With the match tied 1-1 in the second overtime period, Talon Stroud played a pass ahead to Duff, a fellow senior, who unleashed the match-winning strike for his first goal of the season at 104:27.

Stetson has grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the 16th minute.  Jonathan Mendoza played a centering pass to Niels De Jonck just above the penalty spot and the junior fired a shot over the shoulder of Paladin goalkeeper Alec Kann to put the Hatters ahead.

Furman answered at the 36:38 mark.  Josh Fusan chipped a ball towards the top of the six-yard box and, as the defender tried to head the ball clear, Stroud beat the Hatters keeper with a leaping header for his first tally of the season.

Stetson outshot the Paladins 17-8 for the game, but managed just a 7-5 edge in shots on goal.  Furman held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.  Kann stopped four shots to earn the victory for Furman and benefited from two saves off of the line by his teammates, including one by tournament MVP Fabien Vorbe early in the first half.  Andreas Schnabl recorded three saves in the loss for Stetson.

In Sunday's first match, Frannie Twohig netted two goals to lead the College of Charleston past Detroit, 3-1.

The Paladins travel to Mt. Pleasant, S.C., next weekend to take part in the Nike/Aaron Olitsky Memorial Invitational at the College of Charleston.  Furman will face Lehigh at 5 p.m. on Friday before battling Bucknell at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.
