Florence, S.C. – Junior Matt Broome
(70-73=143) posted rounds of 70 and 73 to help the Furman
men's golf team into a tie for fifth place after two rounds
at the season opening Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiate on Monday
at the par-72, 7,062-yard Country Club of South Carolina.
The Paladins (287-291=578) opened with a one-under 287 on the
strength of a two-under 70 from Broome and even par rounds from
freshman Evan Muscari (72-74=146) and Columbia, S.C., native J.B. Murphy (72-77=149). In round two during the afternoon, junior
Anthony Aloi (73-72=145) and sophomore newcomer Matt Brown
(76-72=148) each shot 72 to pace Furman to a three-over 291.
Furman enters Tuesday mornings final round in a fifth place tie
with Southern Conference foe Samford, 16 strokes behind tournament
leader Georgia College. Chattanooga holds second place after
36 holes with Jacksonville State in third and Georgia Southern in
fourth place.
Individually, Broome holds a share of 11th place trailing leader
Chris Robb (66-69=135) of Chattanooga by eight strokes with 18
holes to play. Furman newcomer Johnny Kryger (69-75=144),
playing as an individual, is tied for 18th on the strength of a
first round 69.
