Set Pieces Lift Furman Women's Soccer Over Elon, 2-1

Box Score

Elon, N.C. -- Freshmen Hannah Stanifer and Alyssa Althoff each scored off corner kicks to guide Furman to a 2-1 victory over Elon in Southern Conference women's soccer action on Friday night at Rudd Field in Elon, N.C.

With the match tied 1-1 in the 64th minute, Laura White drove a corner kick towards the penalty spot that Althoff buried into the back of the net with a left-footed volley for her first goal as a Paladin at the 63:26 mark for the eventual match-winner.

"Tonight was a typical night in the Southern Conference," said Furman head coach Andrew Burr.  "It was a well played match and Elon is a talented, well-coached team.  We scored two nice goals and stayed composed at the back all night.  I'm really happy to see us bounce back with a win and to see Alyssa get her first collegiate goal on such a well-struck shot."

The victory improved the Paladins to 9-6-1 overall and 4-2-1 in SoCon play, while Elon slipped to 4-7-4 overall and 2-3-2 in the league.

Furman took an early 1-0 lead just 2:14 into the match on Stanifer's fifth goal of the season.  Freshman India Robinson, who recorded her team-leading sixth assist of the campaign, curled a corner kick to the far post where Stanifer nodded past Elon goalkeeper Kate Murphy.

The Phoenix pulled level at 30:12 as Chelsey Stark redirected Olivia Mackey's 20-yard free kick past Paladin keeper Jessica Smith for her first goal of 2011.

Elon fashioned a 14-10 edge in shot attempts, including 7-5 advantage in shots on goal, but Furman earned nine corner kicks that helped lead to a pair of Paladin scores.

Substitute keeper Shannon Cosgrove notched two saves in the loss for Elon.  Smith stopped six shots to earn the victory between the pipes for the Paladins.

Furman plays its final road match of the regular season on Sunday when it travels to Greensboro, N.C., to face the UNC Greensboro Spartans.  Kickoff at UNCG Stadium is set for 2 p.m.

"We have to rest and refocus for an important match on Sunday," said Burr.  "UNC Greensboro is one of the top teams in the league and is always a tough place to play.
