Furman Suffers Second Straight Sunday Heartbreaker, Falls To UNCG In Overtime, 1-0

Box Score

Greensboro, N.C. -- Kaytee O'Brien headed in a cross in the 106th minute to lift UNC Greensboro to a 1-0 double overtime victory over Furman in Southern Conference women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at UNCG Stadium.

With under five minutes remaining in the second overtime period, Karin Sendel fed a pass to Kristin Player down the left wing and Player delivered a cross towards that back post that O'Brien redirected past Paladin goalkeeper Jessica Smith at the 105:11 mark.

The overtime winner extended UNCG's regular season unbeaten streak against Furman to six matches with the Paladins last regular season series victory coming in 2005.  Furman dropped to 9-7-1 overall and 4-3-1 in SoCon play, while UNCG improved to 7-7-1 overall and 6-1-1 in the league.

"It's frustrating to lose our second straight Sunday double overtime match, but we did a lot of positive things," said Furman head coach Andrew Burr.  "We're competing well against some of the top teams in the league and just need to find a way to finish some chances."

The Paladins, who were outshot 14-9, had their chances to take the lead in regulation.  India Robinson forced UNCG's Kelsey Kearney into a save on a first half header before rattling the post with a shot just minutes into the second half.  Just before the hour mark, Rachel Shelnutt's shot looked bound for the back of the net before a Spartan defender cleared the ball off of the line.

Kearney recorded four saves to earn the shutout for UNCG while Smith recorded two saves in the loss for the Paladins.

Furman returns to Stone Soccer Stadium to open a three-match homestand hosting College of Charleston on Friday at 8 p.m.
