Box Score Greenville, S.C. -- Daniel Hojaij assisted on a pair of goals and 23rd-ranked Furman held off a late Clemson rally to down the Tigers, 3-2, on Tuesday evening at Historic Riggs Field.
The win, Furman's second in a row in Clemson, improved the Paladins to 11-2-3 overall while the Tigers slipped to 4-8-0 on the season.
"It's great to get a quality win against an ACC team on the road," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "We were able to build a lead and show composure in the back to hold on late in the match."
Furman opened the scoring at the 19:13 mark when Martin Ontiveros found space on the left side and played a cross into the middle of the box that a charging Coleton Henning headed inside the near post for his seventh goal of the season.
Austin Savage provided and immediate answer for the Clemson Tigers at 19:52. Keegan Priest delivered a corner kick into the box that was deflected to the near post by a defender before Savage finished at the back post for his fourth tally of the season.
The Paladins regained the lead at the 29:18 mark on the third goal of the season from Alex Crooks. Hojaij ran onto a loose ball at midfield and dribbled to the top of the box before sliding a pass to Crooks on the left side. The Alpharetta, Ga., native fired a low shot off of the Tiger keeper that trickled into the empty net to give Furman a 2-1 lead.
Hojaij set up the deciding goal at the 76:09 mark dribbling down the middle of the field and lofting a ball into the path of Josh Lietch who won the race to the ball and chipped a shot over a sliding Cody Mizell for his first collegiate goal.
Clemson pulled a goal back with 7:08 left in regulation on a Bryniar Benediktsson 10-yard strike, but Alec Kann and the Paladin defense held Clemson without another shot on goal to preserve the victory. Kann totaled four saves, three in the second half, to earn the victory on goal. Mizell notched three saves for the Tigers.
Furman managed a 12-7 edge in shots with each team recording six shots on goal and four corner kicks.
The Paladins return to Southern Conference play on Saturday night when they travel to Boone, N.C., to face Appalachian State. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
