Women's Soccer Falls In Double Overtime At Western Carolina, 1-0

Box Score

Cullowhee, N.C. -- Western Carolina's Madison Lee broke a scoreless deadlock with her first goal of the season in the 101st minute to lift the Catamounts to a 1-0 double overtime victory over Furman in Southern Conference women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon in Cullowhee, N.C.

With the win, Western Carolina improved to 8-3-1 overall and 3-1-0 in league play.  The defeat snapped Furman's four-match unbeaten run and marked their first league loss of the season.  The Paladins fell to 7-5-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the SoCon.

Just 43 seconds into the second overtime, Western Carolina capitalized on its increasingly aggressive play, with a goal by Lee. Redshirt junior Samantha Hodge passed the ball into the box, bounced off the goalie's foot and to Lee, who took a shot into the right side at the 100:43 mark.

"This was a disappointing loss today," said Furman head coach Andrew Burr.  "We created some chances in the first half, but we need to take advantage of those opportunities early in games and we will work on that in training this week."

Furman dominated the offensive end in the opening half forcing Catamount keeper Katie Jacobs into four saves without allowing WCU a shot on goal.  The Catamounts turned up the pressure in the second half and outshot Furman 4-1 during almost 11 minutes of overtime play.

Jacobs stopped five shots to secure the victory for Western Carolina while senior Jessica Smith recorded five saves for Furman.

The Paladins cap their three-match SoCon road trip with a 7 p.m. match at Chattanooga on Thursday before hosting Samford at Stone Soccer Stadium next Sunday at 2 p.m.
