Box Score Davidson, N.C. -- Sophomore Martin Ontiveros converted on a 25-yard free kick in the 54th minute to lift 23rd-ranked Furman over Davidson, 1-0, in Southern Conference men's soccer action on Tuesday evening at Alumni Stadium.
The shutout extended Furman's unbeaten streak to six matches while improving the Paladins, ranked No. 23 in the College Soccer News Top 30 and No. 24 in the NSCAA Top 25, to 12-2-4 overall and 3-1-2 in SoCon play. Davidson fell to 7-7-2 overall and 2-2-1 in the league.
After a scoreless first half that saw Furman's Coleton Henning hit the crossbar in the opening minutes and the two teams combine for just a single shot on goal, the Paladins went on the offensive over the final 45 minutes. Daniel Hojaij missed wide and Jacob Brown had a shot blocked in the opening minutes after the restart before Ontiveros curled his free kick under the bar at 53:29 for his fourth goal of the season.
"It's great to get a win on the road in the Southern Conference no matter who you are playing, and Davidson is an outstanding opponent who beat North Carolina on this same field last week," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "We created a lot of chances tonight and Martin scored a great goal on the free kick."
Furman continued to pressure Davidson with 13 second half shots while forcing Wildcat goalkeeper Chip Sanders into nine saves after the break. The home side managed four shots in a late flurry, but Alec Kann turned away the Wildcats only shot on goal in the sequence to preserve the clean sheet with three saves on the night.
The Paladins fashioned a 16-8 edge in shot attempts, including 10-3 advantage in shots on goal. Furman earned four corner kicks while surrendering six to the Wildcats.
Sanders recorded nine saves for Davidson in the loss. Kann's shutout marked his seventh of the season and 17th of his career.
Furman concludes regular season play on Friday when it hosts the Wofford Terriers in a 7 p.m. contest at Stone Soccer Stadium. A win would secure Furman a top four seed and an opening round home match in SoCon Tournament play.
