Clemson Nips Furman, 68-67

Box Score

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Quinyotta Pettaway scored 16 points and keyed a Clemson second half comeback that helped the Tigers nip Furman, 68-67, in women's basketball action Monday evening at Timmons Arena.

Pettaway, a sophomore forward who also claimed 10 rebounds, helping the taller Tigers forge a 52-43 rebounding advantage, was joined in double figures by Shaniqua Pauldo with 14 points and Nikki Dixon, who contributed 11 points for Clemson (3-2).

Furman (3-2) was paced by Teshia Griswold's 18 points and Sarah Durdaller's 15-point effort.  Raegan Thompson rounded out the Paladins' double figure scoring trio with 13 points.

After a Durdaller 3-pointer with 11:38 to go gave the Paladins a 53-42 lead, Pettaway connected on a jump shot, delivered a pair of free throws, and collected a steal and an assist on a layup by Chancie Dunn to spark a 9-0 run that pulled the Tigers to within two points at 53-51 with 9:18 remaining.

The Paladins responded with a Durdaller three-point play for a 56-51 advantage before Clemson fashioned an 8-0 burst to grab its first lead since early in the contest.  A Shaniqua Pauldo 3-pointer cut it to 56-54, and after a Kelly Gramlich jump shot tied the game Pauldo converted a three-point play to put the Tigers up, 59-56, with 5:43 remaining.

Furman battled back and led 60-59 before a steal and layup by Nikki Dixon put the Tigers ahead for good.  Dixon followed with a rebound and length of the floor dribble for a layup and 63-60 lead with 3:23 to go.

A Dixon free throw with 24 seconds remaining gave the Tigers a 68-64 lead, which Furman cut to 68-67 on a Raegan Thompson 3-pointer.  Dixon was then fouled on the ensuing possession but missed both free throws with 5.2 seconds on the clock.  Furman, however, failed to get off a shot after Kaitlin Murphy met heavy defensive pressure at midcourt as time expired.

Furman used solid 3-point shooting (10-for-23, 43.5 percent) to offset Clemson's significant size advantage inside, which helped limit the Paladins to just 10-for-37 shooting (27.0 percent) inside the 3-point arc.

The Tigers shot a shade under 37 percent from the field (24-for-65).

Pauldo led a trio of Tiger double figure rebounders with 11 caroms, with Lindsey Mason also joining Pettaway in claiming 10 rebounds.

Furman plays its next three games on the road, opening Southern Conference play on Dec. 3 against the College of Charleston.
