Samford Nips Furman In Double Overtime At SoCon Semifinals, 1-0

Box Score

Greensboro, N.C. -- Sarah Wilkinson scored in the 109th minute to lift top-seeded Samford to a 1-0 victory over Furman in the semifinals of the Southern Conference Women's Soccer Championships on Friday at UNCG Stadium.

The Bulldogs, 13-5-2, advance to face the winner of tonight's College of Charleston vs. Georgia Southern match in Sunday's 1 p.m. final on ESPN3.com.  Furman concludes its season with a 12-8-2 record.

With just 1:42 left in the second overtime period, Wilkinson dispossessed a Paladin payer in the box and fired a shot past Furman goalkeeper Jessica Smith for her eighth goal of the season to propel Samford, 10-0-2 this season against league foes, into the finals.

Furman had its chance to finish off the Bulldogs in regulation when freshman India Robinson was fouled in the box after beating her defender at the 87:55 mark, but Samford's Alyssa Whitehead stopped Robinson's penalty kick, struck straight down the middle, to preserve the tie and force overtime.

"This was a heartbreaking way to lose and end our season," said Furman head coach Andrew Burr. "I feel for our seniors, but I'm proud of the effort we gave tonight.  We played toe-to-toe for 108 minutes with the best team in our league, but were just unlucky in the end.

Whitehead, a first team All-SoCon selection, recorded the shutout for Samford while tallying four saves.  Smith, a second team All-SoCon pick, stopped six shots for the Paladins in the loss.

The double overtime winner marked Samford's second of the season against Furman and the Bulldogs' fourth overtime victory over the Paladins in the past three seasons.  Samford, now 5-0-0 all-time against Furman, scored in the 105th minute to down the Paladins 2-1 in the regular season meeting between the schools on October 9, in Greenville, S.C.

After a first half that featured just three total shots, each team attempted seven shots in the second half.  Samford, who managed an 11-10 edge in shots and 7-4 advantage in shots on goal, outshot the Paladins 3-1 in the decisive second overtime period.
