Furman Drops Home Opener To #66 DePaul; Brevard Hands Furman 4-3 Loss

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- #66 DePaul defeated the Furman men's tennis team 5-2 Sunday morning in the Paladins' home opener at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C. 

Furman jumped out to an early lead after winning the doubles point.  Senior Sawyer Duncan and sophomore Andrew Mellow combined for an 8-6 win over  George Chanturia and Matija Palinic at number one doubles, and freshmen Alex Christ and Joel Cook teamed up for an 8-2 win over Mathias Hambach and Bartosz Joswiak in the number two doubles match.  DePaul took the win in the third doubles match, with Filip Dzanko and Ben Hartman posting an 8-1 win over freshman Marco Aru and sophomore Bobby Browning.

In singles action, the Paladins came away with just one win, with Christ beating Palinic 6-4, 6-4 in the second singles match.  Sven Kasper defeated Duncan 6-3, 6-4 at number one singles, while Chanturia beat Mellow 6-2, 7-5 at number three.  In the fourth singles match, Jozwiak handed sophomore Robbie Arun a 6-2, 6-3 loss, while Dzanko defeated Cook 6-3, 6-4 in the fifth singles match.  At number six singles, Hartman and senior Watson George split sets, with George winning the first set 7-6, before Hartman won the final sets 6-2, 6-3.

In the afternoon match, Brevard defeated Furman, 4-3. The Tornados won the doubles point with wins at number one and two doubles.  The Paladins picked up a win at number three doubles, with freshmen Josh Richmond and Austin Hooker defeating Shane Apps and Jarred Fisher 8-3.

The Paladins posted three singles wins, with Cook defeating Cole Altizer 6-4, 6-4 at number two singles, and freshman Nate Collins recording a 7-6, 6-2 win over Fisher in the fifth singles match.  At number six singles, Robbie Aru defeated Apps, 6-0, 6-2.

Furman (0-7) will play at #51 Clemson Friday at 2 p.m.
