Box Score Greenville, S.C. -- Senior Coleton Henning and freshman George Fradenburg netted second half goals to lead Furman past Winthrop, 2-0, in the finale on the Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Stone Soccer Stadium. College of Charleston topped UNC Asheville, 2-1, in double overtime in game one to earn the tournament title over Furman on goal differential.
Furman improved to 4-1-1 on the season with its fourth consecutive victory while Winthrop dipped to 3-2-0.
"It was a great day to honor the victims and heroes of the 9/11 tragedy and the men and women of our armed forces with Military Appreciation Day today," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "It was also a great weekend for us getting two wins."
After a scoreless first half in which Furman outshot the Eagles 12-2, Henning broke the deadlock by driving a low shot inside the right post from 17 yards out in the middle of the box to put the Paladins ahead 1-0 at 57:13. In the 74th minute, Adrian McInnis unleashed a long throw in to the top of the six-yard box where Fradenburg headed past Winthrop keeper Enrique Miranda to double the Furman lead and cap the scoring.
The Paladins built a 25-3 edge in shot attempts, including 10-0 advantage in shots on goal, over 90 minutes while keeper the pressure on the Winthrop defense. Furman earned eight corner kicks and conceded just two.
Alec Kann, who was not forced into a save notched his third shutout in net. Miranda stopped eight shots for Winthrop in the loss.
In the opening match of the day, Charleston's Sean de Silva headed a Frannie Twohig pass into the back of the net at 103:56 to lift the Cougars over UNC Asheville, 2-1.
Furman returns to action next weekend when it travels to Jacksonville and Stetson on a Florida road swing.
