Appalachian State Downs Furman, 66-52

Box Score

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Maryah Sydnor scored 21 points and Appalachian State used a late surge to put away Furman, 66-52, in Southern Conference women's basketball action Monday evening at Timmons Arena.

Sydnor, a sophomore forward, scored 12 of her 21 points in the second half, and delivered a key 3-point play with 4:23 remaining to cap a 7-1 spurt that gave Appalachian State (8-3, 2-1 SoCon) a 58-47 lead en route to the win, their fourth straight over Furman (4-8, 0-3 SoCon).

Sydnor's 7-for-14 shooting performance from the field and 7-for-9 work at the free throw line highlighted an attack that weathered a rare poor free throw shooting effort (16-of-29, 55.2 percent) by the Mountaineers, who entered the contest shooting a nation's best 84.4 percent from the stripe.

Katie Mallow delivered 15 points and Anna Freeman contributed 10 points and a game high 13 rebounds for Appalachian State, which also got six points and a game high nine assists from point guard Raven Gary.

Brittany Hodges and Teshia Griswold paced Furman with 14 points apiece.

The Mountaineers used an 11-0 late first half run to break open a low scoring contest and take a 25-16 lead into intermission.

A Kaitlin Murphy 3-pointer three minutes into the second half pulled the Paladins to within six at 31-25, but the Mountaineer answered with a Mallow 3-pointer, a layup by Courtney Freeman, and a pair of Sydnor free throws to extend their advantage to a 38-25 with 15:34 to go.

ASU led 45-35 with just over 12 minutes remaining before Furman cut the lead to three behind Hodges, who delivered a trio of baskets, including a three-point play, over the next minute and half.

A Holli Wilkins layup at the 8:52 mark sliced ASU's advantage to 47-44, but the Paladins could get no closer as their next four possessions ended with a blocked shot and three turnovers.

The taller Mountaineers forged a 44-30 rebounding advantage and used a mixture of half court pressure and zone defense to force Furman into 24 turnovers.  The Paladins shot just 34 percent from the field, connecting on just 16-of-47 shots.

The Paladins play at Georgia Southern on Wednesday.  Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
