Box Score Elon, N.C. – Elon rallied from a pair of second half deficits and Kelly Siewers scored two late goals to lift the Phoenix to a 4-3 victory over Furman in Southern Conference women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon in Elon, N.C.
The loss snapped Furman's 10-match unbeaten streak and the Paladins' nine-match regular season winning streak against SoCon competition. It marked the first loss for the Paladins in SoCon play since a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Elon on October 7, 2012, at Stone Stadium.
Elon improved to 8-2-4 overall and 2-1-2 in the SoCon, while Furman dropped to 10-3-1 overall and 4-1-0 in league play.
"We have not experienced defeat in a long time so I look for this to be a character builder for our team," said Paladin head coach Andrew Burr. "We have to correct our mistakes and be ready to play when we head to Western Carolina next weekend."
With Furman leading 3-2 and under 12 minutes to play in regulation, Kelly Siewers connected with Olivia Mackey's corner kick and directed her shot inside the near post to knot the match. In the 88th minute, Siewers delivered the match winning goal, taking a pass from Sarah Henson and firing a shot past Paladin goalkeeper Maggie Grisell with under three minutes to play.
Furman looked to be on its way to an eighth consecutive win after taking a 2-0 lead in the opening 17 minutes. Hannah Stanifer led Jamie Alexander with a pass and the sophomore shot to the right side to beat Elon's Kate Murphy to give the Paladins a 1-0 lead at the 13:23 mark. At the 16:48 mark, freshman Carlie Couch doubled the margin with a shot to the right corner on assists from India Robinson and Alexander. Robinson's assist was her nation-leading 13th of the season.
Elon trimmed the margin to 2-1 less than 10 minutes before half on Kendall Stanley's header and pulled even just 56 seconds into the second period on Mackey's shot from almost 40 yards out off of the left post.
The Paladins answered by regaining the lead at 53:44 on Couch's second goal of the day and sixth of the season. The Tifton, Ga., native finished towards the left post on a cross from sophomore Kristen Baker.
Grisell took the loss for Furman while making two saves between the pipes. Sydney Branson came in for the Phoenix to begin the second half and earned the victory while making two saves.
The Phoenix escaped with the win despite Furman holding an 18-10 shots lead and 9-6 edge in shots on goal.
The 4-3 defeat marked just the second time all season that Furman had allowed more than one goal in a match and first time the Paladins had allowed four goals since a 4-1 loss to UNCG on October 17, 2010.
Furman continues its four-match SoCon road trip next weekend when it travels to Cullowhee, N.C., to face Western Carolina at 7 p.m. on Friday before taking on Appalachian State in Boone, N.C., on Sunday, October 20, at 2 p.m.
