Box Score Atlanta, Ga. – Amiri Abraham scored a pair of goals to lead the Georgia State Panthers to a 2-0 victory over 11th-ranked Furman in non-conference men's soccer action on Wednesday night at the Georgia State Athletics Complex.
The loss, which dropped the Paladins to 10-2-2, marked Furman's first defeat since September 1, and snapped its 11-match unbeaten run. The Panthers improved to 6-7-1 overall and scored their fourth victory in four tries this season against Southern Conference opposition.
"We simply weren't good enough," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "We did not create enough chances and were not sharp in the back. We lost as a team. This is not ideal, but we can use this as a lesson that heard work pays off. We have to come to work hard every game..
Abraham put Georgia State in front on the first shot of the match at the 11:30 mark. Stephen McGill delivered a long crossing pass to free Abraham who rounded the charging goalkeeper to deposit his shot into an empty net.
Furman goalkeeper Sven Lissek, who claimed four saves on the night, helped keep the Paladins in the match, but the Paladins were outshot 10-4 and managed just one shot on goal against a stingy Panthers defense. The Paladins best chance came in the 64th minute when Clint Ritter collected the ball 12 yards from net only to see his shot bounce off of the left post and cleared from danger.
Abraham put the match out of reach with just 4:36 left in regulation by heading in Andrew Weber's long cross at the back post for his fifth goal of the campaign.
Georgia State's CJ Cochran picked up the win and the shutout for the Panthers with one save.
Furman returns to Seagraves Field at Stone Stadium to host Georgia Southern on October 29. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
