Spartanburg, S.C. – Junior India Robinson broke a 1-1 tie with a 28-yard strike in the 80th minute to lift the Furman women's soccer to a 3-1 victory over Elon in the Southern Conference Women's Soccer Championship Match Sunday afternoon at Snyder Field in Spartanburg, S.C.
The Paladins, who claimed their fifth league tournament title, also captured the automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. Furman will learn who it will face in the opening round during the tournament selection show which will by streamed live on Monday at 4:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.
With 10:22 remaining, Robinson created space on the right wing and lined a 28-yard shot over the outstretched fingertips of Phoenix goalkeeper Kate Murphy to put Furman in front, 2-1.
Elon pushed players forward in search of the equalizer, and Furman capitalized at 85:14 when Jamie Alexander unleashed a 20-yard effort from the right corner of the box that took a deflection off of a defender and clipped the left post before going in.
The tournament title and NCAA Tournament appearance mark Furman's first since 2007.
Furman (17-3-2) grabbed the lead at the 19:54 mark after Elon had dominated possession in the opening minutes. Hannah Stanifer played a pass down the middle to DeVita who split the Elon defense to finish with a low shot to the corner on the breakaway for her team-leading 15th goal of the season.
The Phoenix wasted little time in netting the equalizer. After Elon won a loose ball in the midfield, Nicole Dennion ripped a shot from the left that Rose Hull saved, but Jennifer McGorty tapped the rebound into an empty net at 23:19 after beating her defender.
Rose Hull made four saves to earn the victory in goal and improve to 13-1-1. Elon outshot the Paladins 16-13, but Furman managed a 9-5 edge in shots on goal.
The win marked Furman's sixth straight victory and stretched the Paladins' unbeaten run to eight matches.
Following the match, Stephanie DeVita was tabbed as the tournament MVP while Robinson, Hull and Catie Moore were named to the all-tournament team.
