Wofford Edges Furman In SoCon Semifinals, 2-1

Box Score

Greenville, S.C. – Top-seed Wofford scored a pair of second half goals to rally the Terriers past Furman, 2-1, in the Southern Conference men's soccer semifinals on Friday night at Stone Soccer Stadium.

With the win, Wofford (11-6-1) advanced to face Elon, 5-0 winners versus Georgia Southern, in the SoCon Championship Match on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. on ESPN3.  Furman dropped to 11-5-2 and will hope to hear its name called during the NCAA selection show this coming week.

The Paladins grabbed a 1-0 lead against the run of play in the 11th minute on Marco Ortiz's second goal of the season.  Dylan Rowe found space out wide on the left side and sent a low, driving cross through the box that Ortiz deflected over the goal line with a sliding effort.

Wofford knotted the game at 1-1 just 2:08 into the second half.  Furman was judged to have committed a foul in the box and Carlos Dominguez Gonzalez converted from the penalty spot with a shot down the middle.

Furman appeared to have regained the lead less than 10 minutes later off of a set piece, but a hand ball was whistled against the Paladins after Bobby Edet fired in a shot from eight yards.

The Terriers finally broke the deadlock at the 77:28.  Ryan Hurst curled a cross into the box from the right flank that brought Furman goalkeeper Sven Lissek off of his line.  The Paladin sophomore tried to punch the ball clear of danger, but Connor Davis intercepted the clearance and volleyed in a shot from 16 yards out to hand Wofford a 2-1 lead.

Furman pushed everyone forward in the final minutes in search of an equalizer, but the Wofford defense held on for the Terriers third straight victory over the Paladins.

Wofford posted an 11-9 edge in shots and 3-2 advantage in shots on goal.  Garrett Closs stopped one shot to earn the victory while Lissek recorded one save for Furman.

The Paladins will find out their NCAA Tournament fate when the tournament field is announced at noon on Monday on NCAA.com.
