Box Score

CONWAY, S.C. -- Holli Wilkins scored 21 points to lead a contingent of five double figure scorers and key Furman to a 79-72 win over Coastal Carolina in women's basketball action Sunday afternoon at HTC Center.

Wilkins tallied 16 of her game high 21 points in the first half to help Furman (6-5) grab a 41-32 halftime lead, and then tacked on five more points over the game's final 20 minutes as the Paladins held off Coastal Carolina (5-4) to win for the fifth time in their last six outings.

Three of Wilkins' teammates — Sarah Durdaller, Brigid Morrissey, and Whitney Bunn — tallied 12 points apiece, and Brittany Hodges rounded out Furman's five-member double figure scoring parade with 10 points to go along with 10 rebounds, marking her fourth double-double performance of the season.

Morrissey tacked on  a game high seven assists and five rebounds in 37 minutes of action, while Bunn's scoring tally, which represented a season high for the freshman, was spiced with four assists and turnover-free ball in 27 minutes.

The victory improved Furman to 17-2 all-time against the Chanticleers, who were paced by AJ Jordan's game high 23 points.

The Paladins only trailed once, falling behind 9-8 five minutes in to the game before a Hodges layup 13 seconds later put head coach Jackie Carson's squad ahead for good.

Furman built its biggest lead of the first half at 41-28 with just under a minute to go before the Chanticleers tallied the final four points of the first period to make it a 41-32 lead at intermission.

Coastal Carolina fashioned a 10-2 run over the first four minutes of the second half to make it a 43-42 game following a Megan Pittman offensive rebound and stick back, but a Durdaller basket blunted the rally.

The Chanticleers stayed within striking distance, getting within one point again at 61-60 after Karsen Sims drained a pair of free throws with 5:50 to go, but a Morrissey layup following baseline penetration helped Furman stay in front.

An Angelica Henry 3-point heave with 3:46 remaining beat the shot clock buzzer and pulled CCU to within two, 68-66, after which the Paladins responded with a Bunn 3-pointer for a 71-66 advantage at the 2:20 mark.

A Hodges layup with 1:17 to go put Furman up 75-70, and following a Chanticleer turnover Bunn effectively slammed the door with a layup and two free trhows over the final 46 seconds of play.

Furman blistered the nets at the 50 percent clip (16-for-32) in the first half, and finished at 45.3 percent, helping offset a 51-41 rebounding shortfall.

Coastal Carolina shot 37.1 percent for the game, connecting on 26-of-70 shots.

The Paladins committed 14 turnovers in the contest but only five in the second half.
