Furman Holds Off Western Carolina, 46-45

Box Score

CULLOWHEE, N.C. -- Holli Wilkins' jump shot with just over four minutes remaining in the game was Furman's last score but it proved to be enough as the Paladins held on to beat Western Carolina, 46-45, in Southern Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Ramsey Center.

The win, the fourth in the last five games for surging Furman (10-12, 6-7 SoCon), avenged an 88-83 triple overtime loss to Western Carolina (6-16, 4-9 SoCon) in Greenville on Jan. 23.

The Paladins and Catamounts have played two overtime games and a one-point decision in their last three meetings.

Teshia Griswold paced the Paladins with 10 points, Wilkins tallied eight, and Brittany Hodges added seven points and seven rebounds.

Three Catamounts — Diamond Hunnicutt, Lindsay Simpson, and Makensey Campbell — registered seven points apiece for Western Carolina.

Led by Griswold's 10 points, Furman shot 57.1 percent in the first half to take a 29-21 lead at intermission.

Western Carolina outscored Furman 12-4 over the first six and half minutes of the second period to tie the game at 33-33 on a pair of Shauna Terry free throws.

A Hodges three-point play at the 10:35 mark and Wilkins jumper a minute later put Furman up, 40-35, but Western Carolina responded with an 8-0 burst, capped by a Janae McKinney three-point play with 6:24 left, to give the Catamounts a 43-40 lead — their first of the contest.

A Hodges layup on the ensuing possession made it 43-42, and the Paladins retook the lead on their next trip down the floor via a Patrice Butler layup with 5:26 to go.

It remainied a one-point game until Wilkins converted Brigid Morrissey's 11th assist of the game into a basket to stretch Furman's advantage to 46-43 at the 4:01 juncture.

WCU's Alex Abraham pulled the Catamounts to within a point at 46-45 with 2:48 left, but that would do it for the game's scoring as WCU misfired on a shot and suffered three turnovers on its final four possessions.  Furman, meanwhile, failed to extend its lead following Wilkins' basket, turning it over twice, going 0-for-3 from the field, and failing to connect on three free throw opportunities over the final four minutes of play.

The Paladins finished the contest shooting 42.6 percent (20x47) while Western Carolina connected on just 15-of-45 field goal attempts (33.3 percent).  Furman continued its improved work on the boards by posting a 35-29 rebounding advantage in the contest.

Morrissey's 11 assists matched a career high set in the first meeting between the Paladins and Catamounts.
