Barker's Brace Lifts Georgia Over Furman, 2-0

Box Score

Athens, Ga. – Madeline Barker scored a pair of goals and Georgia limited Furman to just three shots on goal as the Bulldogs downed the Paladins, 2-0, in women's soccer action Sunday afternoon at Turner Stadium.

With the victory, Georgia improved to 3-1-0 on the season.  The loss dropped Furman to 1-2-0.

"When you play an SEC team like the Georgia Bulldogs, you have to play physical and at a high pace," said Paladin head coach Andrew Burr.  "I didn't think we reached that level today and they were able to keep the pressure on us."

Georgia outshot the Paladins 32-6, including a 17-3 advantage in shots on goal.  After testing sophomore goalkeeper Maggie Grisell several times in the opening minutes, Georgia notched the go-ahead goal in the 21st minute.  Barker raced into the right side of the box and held off her defender to fire a driving shot across the face of goal to the far side netting.

Furman created its best chances of the afternoon late in the first half.  Stephanie DeVita created space for herself from 22 yards out on the left side of the box, but the sophomore saw her long rage effort clear the cross bar.  Jamie Alexander got on the end of a cross into the box only to have a foul called on the Paladins and Ali Simpson had her header off of an Alyssa Althoff cross blocked before being cleared out of the box.

The Bulldogs put the game out of reach in the 56th minute when Barker dispossessed a Paladin defender and drilled a shot into the upper left-hand corner for her second goal of the day.

Caitlin Woody earned the win in goal for the Bulldogs while recording three saves.  Grisell stopped six first half shots for Furman before Rose Hull turned away nine UGA shots in the final 45 minutes.

The Paladins return to the field on Thursday when they hosts USC Upstate at Stone Soccer Stadium.  Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.  Fans can log onto www.FurmanPaladins.com to hear Bryant Lambert and Sam Tooker call the action and to access live statistics of the match.  In-game updates will also be available on Twitter by following @FurmanWSoccer.
