GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman continues its early season road stretch this Saturday when it travels to Conway, S.C., to take on the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. Kickoff for the WMYA-40/ESPN3 televised contest at Brooks Stadium is set for 6:00 p.m.
Chuck Hussion will deliver the televised play-by-play call, and former Paladin All-American center Corey Stewart is set to provide color analysis.
Saturday's game will be radio broadcast over the Furman Sports Network and flagship station WGOG-FM 96.3 in Seneca, and will also carried by Greenville's FoxSports AM 1440 and via stadium transmitter at FM 105.9. In addition, it will be audio streamed through Stretch Internet at FurmanPaladins.com. Dan Scott, the "Voice of the Paladins," will call the play-by-play and be joined by Gordon Higgins with color commentary.
Last year the Paladins and Chanticleers played a triple overtime affair in Greenville, which Coastal Carolina won, 47-45. The Chanticleers led 22-12 with four minutes remaining in the game before Furman true freshman quarterback Reese Hannon, who came off the bench in the second period for injured starter Dakota Derrick, rallied the Paladins to help send the game into overtime. The Greer, S.C., completed 22-of-35 passes for 255 yards and four touchdowns.
The Chanticleers went on to post a 9-5 record, claim a share of the 2012 Big South Conference championship, and register the program's first FCS playoff victory under first-year head coach Joe Moglia.
Coastal Carolina, which opened the 2013 season last Saturday with a 27-20 road win at South Carolina State, owns a 3-1 lead in the young series and is 2-0 versus the Paladins in Brooks Stadium, including a 30-23 triumph in the 2011 season opener.
Furman kicked off its 2013 campaign with a 28-21 loss at Gardner-Webb. The Paladins built a 21-7 third quarter lead but couldn't hold on in suffering their third straight season opening loss.
The Paladins are paced by senior offensive tackle Dakota Dozier, a 2012 Sports Network and Associated Press All-America selection who has been named to numerous preseason All-America squads. Phil Steele's College Preview rates the 6-foot-5, 303-pound Dozier was the best offensive lineman in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) and No. 4 overall player (all positions).
Joining Dozier as a squad headliner are senior placekicker/punter Ray Early of Darlington, S.C., a consensus first team preseason All-SoCon choice at both positions, and junior defensive end Gary Wilkins, a second team choice.
The 2013 Paladins are very young overall, counting 44 freshmen among the program's 86 players. The youth is most evident on defense, which sports freshmen backups at nine of the 11 positions.
