Box Score Greenville, S.C. -- Wofford's Matthew Aurednik netted a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes of regulation to lift the Terriers to a 2-0 victory over Furman and snap the Paladins' eight-match unbeaten streak in Southern Conference men's soccer action on Tuesday night at Stone Soccer Stadium.
With under 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Aurednik beat goalkeeper Sven Lissek to a back pass from a Paladin defender, headed the bouncing ball past the junior and headed into the center of an empty net to put Wofford in front at the 80:11 mark. The goal, Aurednik's ninth of the season, snapped Furman's shutout streak just short of 715 minutes.
Less than five minutes later, Aurednik beat his defender on the right wing and lined a shot past the charging keeper that found the far-side netting at 84:21 for the final 2-0 score line and his 10th tally of the season.
The loss dropped the Paladins to 5-2-3 overall and 1-1-1 in the Southern Conference, while Wofford upped its record to 6-4-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the league with its fourth straight victory over the Paladins.
Furman controlled a good deal of the possession in the opening 45 minutes and narrowly missed taking the lead in the 33rd minute when Marco Ortiz played a give-and-go with Lewis Hawke, but Ortiz's shot from the left wing missed wide.
Wofford threatened just before the half as Lissek was forced to make a diving save on Nestor Jaramillo's free kick. On the ensuing corner kick, Forrest Lasso directed a header towards goal that the Paladin netminder stopped.
In the second half, Furman once again pressed for the go-ahead score. Evan DeYcaza hammered home what appeared to be the go-ahead score at the back post in the 53rd minute off of a free kick, but the sophomore was whistled offside. Furman's Tony Santibanez forced Wofford goalkeeper Garrett Closs to tip his shot over the bar in the 55th minute and Bobby Edet rounded a sprawling Closs in the 69th minute only to have a Terrier defender deflect his goal-bound shot clear of danger.
The Paladins finished the match with a 17-12 edge in total shot attempts, while shots on goal were equal at five apiece.
Closs made four saves to record the shutout for the Terriers and Lissek turned away three shots for Furman.
The Paladins will look to rebound when they travel to Macon, Ga., to face SoCon newcomer Mercer on Saturday at 8 p.m.
