Quick Start Helps Wofford Past Furman, 3-1

Box Score

Greenville, S.C. -- Wofford netted a pair of goals in the opening 31 minutes en route to a 3-1 victory over Furman in Southern Conference men's soccer action on a damp Seagraves Field at Stone Soccer Stadium on Friday night.

With the loss, Furman dropped to 4-4-2 overall and 3-1-0 in the SoCon, while Wofford pulled even with the Paladins by improving to 3-1-0 in the league and 8-2-1 overall.

After Furman nearly took the lead through Marco Ortiz on a set piece in the opening minutes, Wofford grabbed the advantage when Nicky Watson hammered an errant back pass in the net past a stranded Sven Lissek at the 11-minute mark.

In the 31st minute, another turnover by the Paladins bounced to Tanner DeFreitas on the left wing and he laced a shot off of the far right post and into net to give the Terriers a 2-0 cushion.

Furman looked to push forward early in the second half, but it was the Terriers who struck first.  Nestor Jaramillo received a pass from Will Puckett on the left wing and rocketed a shot into the far right-hand corner from 25 yards out for his team-best fourth goal of the campaign.

The Paladins managed to break through less than a minute later as Noah Teplitzky played a pass from the left corner to Josiah Baker who redirected the ball into the six yard box for Ortiz to punch past Wofford goalkeeper Garrett Closs at 56:20.

Tony Santibanez, Kyle McLagan and Lewis Hawke all had chances in the box in the late going and Baker drew a foul that was ruled to be just outside of the box in the final 15 minutes, but Furman was unable to halve the two goal deficit.

Closs stopped three shots to earn the win for Wofford.  Lissek did not record a save in 87 minutes in net for Furman.

The Paladins compiled a 16-10 edge in shot attempts with both teams turning four shots on goal.

Furman will look to return to the win column when it travels to SoCon foe ETSU on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Johnson City, Tenn.
