Box Score Greenville, S.C. -- The Furman women's soccer team picked up a point in the Southern Conference standings by playing to a 0-0 draw with the UNCG Spartans on Friday night at Stone Soccer Stadium.
Senior goalkeeper Maggie Grisell smothered five shots to notch her second straight shutout as the Paladins moved to 8-4-1 overall and 1-1-1 in SoCon play. UNCG's Chloe Buehler also turned away five shots to help the Spartans to 3-7-3 overall and 1-1-1 in the league.
The Spartans pushed forward on the attack early on as Furman was forced to block two shots and clear an Ashley Eddleman shot off of the goal line in the opening five minutes. UNCG continued to apply the pressure and went into intermission holding a 9-4 edge in shot attempts and 5-0 lead in corner kicks.
Furman came out strong in the second 45 minutes and forced the Spartans into four saves, including back-to-back shots on target by Rachel Shah and Stephanie DeVita moments after the hour mark, while the Paladins compiled a 10-7 edge in shots over the second period.
UNCG managed the only shot on goal over the two 10-minute extra periods, but Grisell smothered the low drive to secure the scoreless draw.
The Spartans finished with an 18-16 advantage in shot attempts and 6-5 lead in shots on target.
