Box Score Spartanburg, S.C. – Bella Santoro put down 14 kills and led Wofford to a 3-0 (20-25, 16-25, 23-25) win over the Paladins on Wednesday night. The loss drops Furman to 10-5 on the year and 4-1 in SoCon play, while the win moves Wofford to 9-10 on the year at 2-2 in SoCon play.
Annie Bierman led the Paladins in kills with 12 kills and 17 digs, while Jo Wilks dished out 26 assists.
The teams traded points early in set one, until back-to-back Paladin points gave Furman the early 8-6 lead. The Terriers responded with two quick points of their own to tie the set at eight, but the Paladins again opened up a two-point lead at 11-9. Furman then pushed the lead to three at 13-10, but Wofford again responded and cut the lead to one at 14-13. The Terriers tied the match at 15, then opened up their biggest lead of the set at 18-15, forcing a Furman timeout. The teams traded points out of the timeout, until Wofford pushed its lead to four at 20-16. The teams continued to trade points until the Terriers grabbed a 23-19 lead and forced Furman to take its second timeout of the set. Out of the timeout, the Terriers held on to the lead and took set one, 25-20, for a 1-0 lead in the match.
Furman and Wofford again traded points early in the second set, until Wofford opened up a two-point advantage at 5-3. The teams continued to trade points until the Terriers opened up a four-point lead at 10-6, forcing a Furman timeout. Out of the timeout, the Paladins were able to cut the lead to two, but Wofford continued to hold all the momentum, taking a six-point lead at 14-8. The Terriers then pushed the lead to eight at 18-10 and forced Furman to take its final timeout of the set. Out of the timeout, Wofford held on to the lead to take the set 25-16, to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
It was Furman that opened up the early two-point lead in set three, but Wofford used a 5-0 run to take a 7-4 lead over the Paladins. The Terriers then used a 5-3 run to push the lead to 12-7 and force Furman to take its first timeout of the set. Out of the timeout, Wofford pushed the lead to six at 17-11, but it was the Paladins that rallied in this set, cutting the lead to one at 18-17 and forcing a Wofford timeout. Out of the timeout, Jordan McNeill continued her serving run, giving the Paladins a 19-18 lead. Wofford once again rallied, however, taking a 23-21 lead and prompting Furman's final timeout of the set. Out of the timeout, back-to-back Furman points forced Wofford to call a timeout of its own after the Paladins tied the set at 23. Back-to-back points by Wofford gave the Terriers the 25-23 set three win and 3-0 match victory.
Furman is back in action on Friday, as it welcomes SoCon-unbeaten Chattanooga to Alley Gym for a 6:00 pm matchup.
